New lithium battery drop-off rules now in effect at the Oxford County Waste Management Facility
The Hazardous Waste Facility at the Oxford County Waste Management Facility has updated how it accepts and stores batteries. Effective immediately, lithium batteries must be separated from other batteries. Place each lithium battery in a clear plastic bag or tape its positive terminal.
This change complies with new Transport Canada requirements for safely transporting lithium batteries and helps reduce fire risk.
Thank you for following this new policy.
What are lithium batteries
Lithium batteries can be both rechargeable and single-use batteries. Rechargeable lithium batteries are commonly used in everyday electronics such as smartphones, power tools and electric vehicles. Look for labels such as “Lithium-ion,” “LiION,” “Li-ion” or “Li-Ion” to identify them. Single-use lithium batteries are usually labelled “lithium” or look for initials such as CR, BR or FR.
