Wastewater Treatment Operator

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for monitoring and controlling the sewage treatment process.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Monitors the sewage treatment process. Prepares a daily Operator’s Report detailing items such as:
    • the amount of sludge processed, amount of flow between tanks, digester temperatures, amount of wasting, amount of air used in aeration tanks
    • chemical consumption, machinery operating hours
    • regularly checks machinery operations and reports mechanical problems to maintenance.
  2. Controls the sewage treatment process, performing duties, such as, but not limited to:
    • transfers sludge between digesters,
    • adjusts the amount of wasting to maintain required food / microorganism ratio, 
    • controls flow within the plant, ensuring sludge is treated correctly,
    • adjusts the amount of chlorine added at the final processing stage, 
    • dependent on amount of flow,
    • collects samples for laboratory tests.
  3. Strictly adheres to Ministry of Environment and health and safety regulations, is working with hazardous chemicals, gases and over open water
  4. Performs general maintenance duties, such as, but not limited to:
    • hoses out tanks, sump holes, scum troughs, 
    • scums off primary tanks,
    • assists the Plant Maintenance Operator, performing duties such as, regularly 
    • greasing and oiling equipment and acting as a maintenance helper, 
    • cleans buildings and equipment, 
    • cuts grass, weeds, flower beds, paints and shovels snow.
  5. Performs other duties related to Wastewater Treatment Plant operations, such as, but not limited to: 
    • records daily weather readings such as temperature, precipitation, wind velocity, to be forwarded to the London Weather Office, 
    • receives chemical deliveries, 
    • trains new staff,
    • completes a daily time card detailing work done and equipment used.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent as determined by the Corporation and certification as a Wastewater Treatment Operator.
  2. Good physical condition.
  3. Able to work in confined spaces.
  4. First aid training is an asset.
  5. Familiarity with safety regulations.
  6. Interest in wastewater treatment.
  7. Valid Class "G" driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Subject to working in all weather conditions. Frequently wet due to extensive use water hoses. 
  2. Works with hazardous chemicals and gases in confined spaces. Exposed to health hazards present in sludge, such as bacteria and viruses. 
  3. Required to do heavy lifting and at times handle sludge. 
  4. Works regular hours plus weekends when on call and overtime as required.
