Associate Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY:

Maintains the day-to-day operations of a library branch in the absence of the Branch Supervisor. Associate Supervisors are not assigned to a particular branch library and are expected to be available to work on short notice. All Oxford County Library (OCL) employees are responsible for supporting the OCL’s values statement by supporting and promoting a welcoming environment, lifelong learning and innovation.

KEY ACOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provides the following services:
    • Responsible for opening the branch and maintaining overall tidiness. Acts as first point of contact to address equipment failure, facility related issues and emergencies.
    • Deliver front-line service to library visitors through circulation tasks including check-in/out, renewing items, placing holds, processing transit items, and completing requests for new or interlibrary loan materials.
    • Maintain a library environment that is welcoming to all patrons, orienting new users, providing assistance with a variety of technology devices, readers’ advisory, and provision of information.
    • Bring forth policy and procedural concerns and ideas for change as necessary.
    • Process branch exchanges and book transfers to other branches. Actively promotes collections when necessary.
  • Provide direct supervision of on-site staff such as Pages, Public Service Clerks, Grant staff and volunteers when necessary.
  • Maintain communication with Branch Supervisor before and after coverage.
  • Receive service related complaints, concerns and questions in a timely and responsive manner. Refers and escalates to the appropriate individual as necessary. 
  • Support the organization’s programs and services by promoting the County’s Strategic Plan, Future Oxford Community Sustainability Plan, best practices, internal policies, and applicable legislation, to meet service excellence standards and uphold Oxford’s vision, mission and values.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS

  • Post-secondary education in Library studies or a related discipline. University education is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a library environment. Previous supervisory experience is an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Advanced computer proficiency, including familiarity with and adaptability to new technologies. Knowledge of library software/ILS and systems are strongly recommended.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with a variety of patrons and community groups and members 
  • Ability to demonstrate the required competencies for this position in alignment with Oxford County’s competency framework.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, prioritize multiple deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team.
  • Knowledge of relevant trends, legislation and regulations

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works in a variety of physical conditions given multiple branches with variable layouts, lighting, size, heating and cooling systems, entrance and exit options.
  • Works in a library environment within a multipurpose building; hours of work include evenings and Saturdays. 
  • Physical activity including lifting heavy boxes, bending and squatting, pushing carts of books/materials, and sitting/standing for extended periods of time.
  • Some basic building maintenance tasks required, such as shovelling of walkways.
