POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION SUMMARY:
Ensures the shelves are in good order so selection of books for exchange or requests can be done in a timely, efficient manner. Assists with other functions as determined by supervisor.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Shelves books daily, being careful to maintain strict order, either alphabetically by author or according to Dewey number.
- Assists with public service, for example circulation, patron registration, computer use, simple reference questions, photocopying, and reader’s advisory.
- Assists with exchanges or requests as directed.
- Searches for lost books.
- Assists with circulation.
- Assists with book displays, posters, summer reading, children’s programming, and other assistance needed.
- Telephones patrons to inform of book requests, or overdue books, in an understanding and courteous manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 14 years of age, who is a quick learner, and able to complete on the job training
- Knowledge of basic computer skills and the Internet is essential
- Good communication and interpersonal skill
- Knowledge of shelving systems, including the Dewey decimal system.
- Knowledge of the community is an asset.
- Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works in a library environment with all ages, including pre-school children.
- Physical demands include bending, making repetitive motions, lifting boxes of books, pushing carts, and lifting/moving tables and chairs.
