Maintenance Person

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for maintaining Wastewater Treatment Plant equipment, facilities, buildings and computer maintenance records.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Plant maintenance requirements: 
    • Checks all facilities and equipment regularly and investigates any irregularities,
    • Prepares and completes work orders and priorities set by Supervisor,
    • Advises on priority of maintenance tasks, 
    • Records all maintenance work on computer records,
    • Assists in maintaining an equipment supply record and equipment drawings, 
    • Assists in maintaining an equipment file on all plant equipment, 
    • Regularly sounds bearings and records results.
  2. Ensures safety equipment such as flame arresters, fire extinguishers, sentry lights, escape hatches, gas alarm system, etc. are operating correctly.
  3. Makes mechanical repairs, such as, but not inclusively as follows: 
    • Replaces bearings,
    • Minor repairs on motors,
    • Pump rebuilds, 
    • Machine shop work such as sandblasting and lathe work,
    • Welds as required,
    • Reads diagrams and schematics to determine work procedures,
    • Makes mechanical failure predictions based on past performance records.
  4. Makes minor electrical repairs
    • Performs preventative electrical maintenance on a regular schedule,
    • Makes minor electrical repairs when voltage is under 300 volts such as replacing lighting ballasts, receptacle replacement etc., 
    • Disconnects and reconnects all motors when power has been isolated from device,
    • Cleans electrical panels,
    • Monitors PLC controls.
  5. Follows a regular preventative maintenance schedule, performing duties, such as, but not inclusive:
    • Greases, oils and cleans equipment,
    • Replaces worn parts,
    • Keeps records up to date within the computerized maintenance management system. 
  6. Advises Supervisor of need to call in qualified services personnel such as, electricians etc., if repairs are too extensive or beyond the capabilities of plant staff.
  7. Maintains plant efficiency:
    • When requested by Supervisor will call for best pricing on parts,
    • Advises on scheduled down time of equipment,
    • When requested will research equipment literature for innovations.
  8. Strictly adheres to Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) and health and safety regulations, when working with hazardous chemicals, gases, over open water etc.
  9. Performs other duties related to Treatment Plant operations, such as, but not inclusive: 
    • Manufactures equipment such as benches, specialized tools, brackets, etc.,
    • General maintenance duties such as cleaning building, shoveling snow, cutting grass, painting, etc.
  10. Works with general supervision. Performs maintenance duties at remote plants.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned from time to time.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Licensed Industrial Mechanic/ Millwright. 
  2. Experience with computers, preventative maintenance programs and data entry is required.
  3. Must be able to obtain Maintenance Gas Fitters and Digester Gas System Maintenance certificates, Ministry-approved welding certificate. 
  4. Must be able to obtain certification as a wastewater treatment operator.
  5. Must be able to work in confined spaces. 
  6. Valid Ontario Driver’s license required (AZ/DZ preferred).
  7. Past mechanical experience with regards to blueprint reading, mechanical safety, welding, electronics, hydraulics, and proper maintenance procedures.
  8.  Must be able to work on own and be self motivated. 9. Developed written and oral communication skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  1. Subject to working in all weather conditions. 

  2. Exposed to hazardous chemicals, gases and health hazards present in sludge, such as bacteria and viruses on a daily bases.

  3. Required to do heavy lifting and at times handle sludge, work with sewage, etc.

  4. Works regular hours and overtime as required.
