Emergency Preparedness Week May 7 - 13

Back to Search

Emergency Preparedness Week is May 7 - 13 and this year’s theme is Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.

Oxford County residents are encouraged to understand the risks in our area and learn what actions they can take to protect themselves and their families. Flash floods, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, blizzards, freezing rain, and high winds are common natural disasters in our area. Preventing these disasters may be beyond our control, but there are ways to reduce the risks.

Be prepared for any natural disaster and know where to go when conditions worsen. Designate a safe room in your home where people and pets can gather in extreme conditions. This should be a basement, storm cellar, or interior room on the lowest floor with no windows. Ensure you have a battery-powered radio, cell phone, basic first aid items, snacks, and water. Everyone has a role to play in an emergency. Every household needs a portable Grab and Go emergency kit.

Visit www.oxford72hours.ca to learn more about emergency management plans in your community and go to www.getprepared.ca to learn the three steps of emergency preparedness. Find out what items you need in your Grab and Go emergency kit by watching the video below:
