POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Supervisor of Engineering Services, this position assists with the planning, design and construction of County infrastructure. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Prepares design drawings, reports, planning, engineering, agency approvals, tender documents and construction of public works infrastructure owned by the County. May liaise with consultants and contractors on projects for the County.
  • Prepares “as built” drawings of new construction and maintains records of all asbuilt drawings and assists with locates.
  • Assists with representing the County’s interests in meetings and discussions involving County owned facilities with area municipalities, Provincial Ministries, contractors and other external agencies. 
  • Performs field investigations and surveys to obtain design and drafting information.
  • Provide engineering related information to contractors, consultants, general public and municipal staff in person, in writing, by telephone or electronically.
  • Makes use of engineering software, such as, sanitary sewer collection modeling, road profile and cross section design and quantity calculations etc.
  • Work with other Departments to prepare various land use maps using Geographic Information System (GIS) and AutoCad, Land Desktop Development (LDD) software and maintain and update databases using GIS and other available software.
  • Provides project management, including tender document preparation, contract administration and site supervision.
  • Operates drafting, scanning, printing, plotting and reproduction equipment and evaluates and recommends updates on  hardware and software, and requisitions drafting, computer and reproduction supplies.
  • Collects and maintains Geographic Information System (GIS) information pertaining to the County infrastructure.
  • Provides horizontal and vertical survey control, survey layout, and acquires topographic details related to capital projects.
  • Mentors and coaches junior technical staff or students as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or Environmental Technology or equivalent related work experience and are able to obtain a membership as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with OACETT.
  • Thorough knowledge of all areas of sectional responsibility of all applicable legislations and regulations and a minimum of five years’ related municipal engineering experience. Including experience with the design of storm sewer, water, wastewater, and roads.
  • Knowledge of current design standards and construction practices relating to municipal engineering, working knowledge of current regulations and legislation as applied to municipal engineering.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, including written reports, verbal presentations and computer technology. The ability to use CIVIL 3D, AutoCAD for drawing preparation would be an asset.
  • Must be familiar with the use of current survey technologies including Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for data collection.
  • Use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and practices relating to design, input, managing, editing, analysis, and graphic and tabular data output.
  • Knowledge of CAD techniques, procedures, conventions, and standards.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works in an office environment.
  • Standing work including operating survey instruments, and while observing and recording construction inspections.
  • May be exposed to hazards related to construction sites, including inclement weather and traffic.
  • May require the use of hand-held shovel, hammer, pick axe for lifting maintenance hole and catchbasin covers.
