Network Technician

POSITION SUMMARY:

Support the stable operation, security and integrity of in-house voice, data, video, and wireless network services. Participate with the installation, monitoring, maintenance, support, and optimization of all network hardware, software, and communication links.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Strategy & Planning
    • Collaborate with the Senior Network Engineer to assess short and long-term network capacity needs.
    • Create and maintain documentation as it relates to network configuration, network mapping, processes, and service records.
    • Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining policies, procedures, and associated training plans for cybersecurity, network administration, usage, business continuity, and disaster recovery, that are aligned with applicable municipal and legislative standards. Delivers training as required.
  • Acquisition & Deployment
    • Support development and implementation of networking projects and new technology installations.
    • Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards in support of network procurement and development efforts. Evaluate and recommend for purchase networking hardware and software products.
    • Write technical specifications for purchase of networking hardware and software products.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of networking contracts and supervise contract-based installations.
  • Operational Management
    • Configure networks to ensure their smooth and reliable operation for fulfilling business objectives and processes. 
    • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot problem areas as needed.
    • Ensure network connectivity of all servers, workstations, telephony equipment, and other network appliances.
    • Monitor systems and networks for security breaches and respond promptly to incidents. Investigate security alerts and provide detailed reports on findings and mitigation steps.
    • Coordinate incident response activities, including communication with stakeholders and external agencies.
    • Perform network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
    • Participate in managing all network and cybersecurity solutions.
    • Assist in performing server and security audits, and system backups and recovery.
    • Perform on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex network problems for a variety of end users, recommend and implement corrective hardware and software solutions, including off-site repair.
    • Maintain all network hardware and equipment: including firewalls, routers, switches, hubs, and UPSs etc.
  • Receive, analyse, and resolve network hardware and software problems and questions in a timely and responsive manner. Refers and escalates to the appropriate individual as necessary. 
  • Liaise with Area Municipalities and internal and external stakeholders. Provide end user training where required
  • Support the organization’s programs and services by promoting the County’s Strategic Plan, best practices, internal policies, and applicable legislation, to meet service excellence standards and uphold Oxford’s vision, mission and values.
  • Understand and comply with role specific health and safety responsibilities, with internal and external safety policies, procedures, and legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:

  • Post-secondary education in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline
  • Proven knowledge with network capacity planning, network security principles, and general network management best practices.
  • Additional certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate/Professional (CCNA/P) are considered an asset.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and hands on experience of network and operating systems, VoIP telephony systems, and troubleshooting/research issues
  • Knowledge of relevant trends, legislation and regulations including current protocols, Internet standards, and data privacy practices and laws.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, collaboration, interpersonal and customer service skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Competence with testing tools and procedures for voice and data circuits.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities. Able to effectively prioritize tasks in a high-pressure situation.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works on-site, in an office environment with frequent keyboarding and off-site at various work locations.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Occasional lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals. Occasional inspection of cables in floors and ceilings.
  • Able to use hand tools and small power tools. 
  • On-call rotation requires occasional availability on weekends and after hours.
