Proposed Special Economic Zones Act for Ontario

County Council receives an update next council meeting on the Special Economic Zones Act that is part of Ontario’s Bill 5 - Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act. County’s staff review of the proposed changes notes they are substantial and, where applied, could impact the ability of municipalities to plan for sustainable growth and protect agricultural land and other natural resources. The report explains that further detail and clarification of the intent of the proposed changes is needed to allow for effective review and comment. The Special Economic Zones Act is intended to move projects through the permitting processes more quickly by designating special economic zones, designated projects, and trusted proponents.
