Truck and Backhoe Operator

POSITION SUMMARY:

Operates a variety of heavy equipment and performs duties assigned by the Patrol Foreman in conjunction with seasonal work plan including maintenance of culverts, roads, roadsides and safety devices. Performs winter control activities.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Required to operate a tandem/or single axle dump truck, tractor mower/loader/backhoe, roller, hydraulic bucket lift, weedsprayer, grader(when required),highway sweeper/catchbasin cleaner, snowblower, asphalt paver, highway line marker, pickup truck, and other miscellaneous power and hand tools.

  2. Performs roadside maintenance such as mowing grass, weed spraying, trimming/removal of brush and trees, ditching, cleaning of storm sewers, catchbasins, culverts, hand patching of shoulders, filling of washouts, repairing, adjusting and installing signs, cleaning curbs and gutters, picking up litter and debris.

  3. Performs road surface maintenance such as machine and hand asphalt patching, spray patching, hauling and spreading granular materials.

  4. Inspects culverts and performs maintenance such as removing debris, culvert removal, associated ditching and installs new or repaired culverts.

  5. Performs linestriping on roads and highways using a highway line marker and hand spray equipment at crosswalks and school crossings.

  6. Performs winter control operations such as plowing highways to remove snow and ice, sanding and salting roadways, loading sand/salt/snow, and maintaining catchbasins, culverts and roadsides for drainage.

  7.  As directed, checks, adjusts, installs and removes safety devices, signs, delineators and guide rails.

  8. Performs maintenance of all road equipment such as changing oil, lubricating, minor repairs, replacing shoes and blades, cleaning, scraping, sand-blasting and painting.

  9. Sets up safe lane closures and detour routes by placing detour signs and by flagging traffic as directed.

  10. Operates highway sweepers/catchbasin cleaner in urban centres.

  11. Hand/machine excavates and plants trees.

  12. Cleans bridges and paints railings using high pressure spray wash and hand/power cleaning tools and painting equipment.

  13. Required to perform physical work such as lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying.

  14. Requires good working knowledge of road safety practices and required to be a competent worker as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

  15. In the absence of the Patrol Foreman, when required and agreed to, assumes supervisory responsibilities, including work planning and scheduling the performance of daily tasks, all in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Grade 10 or equivalent experience.

  2. Valid Class A/D license with Z endorsement required.

  3. Previous construction/equipment operator experience or equivalent is required.
