POSITION SUMMARY:
Directs and supervises nursing staff in providing health care to residents. Possesses the ability and the passion to support person centered care, and change the culture of aging in long term care. Plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates activities for the efficient and effective management of the nursing units and staff. In the absence of management staff (evenings, nights and weekends) the Registered Nurse provides supervision to the entire facility and all departments
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Accountable for own actions to the College of Nurses.
- Provides nursing care in accordance with administrative policies, physicians’ orders, established standards and nursing principles.
- Carries drug room and master keys to the Lodge allowing access as needed.
- Observes, assesses, documents, and evaluates all situations concerning each resident and ensures that their physical, social, spiritual and psychological needs are met.
- Assists with processing physician orders, drug orders, diagnostic tests, and arranging of appointments. Completes rounds to each unit with the Medical Director, and assists other physicians with their rounds as required. Maintains ongoing communication with doctors and families of any changes in resident’s health status.
- Completes medication passes and treatment when needed.
- Completes initial assessment conference and multi-disciplinary team conference, computerized documentation and chairs or participates in these meetings with other disciplines, the resident and the family.
- Assists with ongoing work of other staff, for example, supporting the RPN role, answering call bells, and assisting with care, feeding, and assessment of residents as needed. Replaces staff after hours and on weekends.
- Responds to health and safety, fire and disaster, and staff and resident emergencies. Completed staff incident reports as required.
- Assists the Manager of Resident Services and the Nursing Supervisors in training, supervising and evaluating departmental nursing personnel. Takes an active leadership role in the department. - Supervises staff on each shift, ensuring safe and effective care is being provided. Familiar with and ensures that ministry guidelines and the Resident’s Bill of Rights are being met at all times.
- Maintains good communication with all levels of staff, which would include, but is not limited to, reading and reviewing unit and individual e-mails at the beginning of each scheduled shift.
- Addresses staff, resident care and facility issues as they arise, and reports to the Manager of Resident Services.
- Aware of appropriate Infection Control practices and how they relate to Long Term Care.
- Performs RAI/MDS tasks/documentation as assigned.
- Completes nursing audits as assigned.
- Provides first aid measures and initiates and assists with CPR.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Reviews the Environment Canada website for any weather related advisories and follows appropriate severe weather procedures prior to each shift.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Registered Nurse with a current license from the applicable licensing authority.
- Current CPR certificate.
- Demonstrated leadership ability with comprehensive knowledge of nursing and health care practices and techniques as they relate to long term care.
- Maturity, empathy, patience and tact.
- Seeks out opportunities to maintain competency and continued learning.
- Basic computer skills.
