POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Coordinator of Resident Programs and Support Services, develops, implements and assesses therapeutic, recreational and physical programs to meet the needs of individual residents.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To initiate and foster positive ongoing interactions with residents, thereby encouraging them to:
a) exercise choice and self-expression through individual or group participation in programs;
b) participate in familiar physical, social, cultural or creative programs;
c) participate in learning new physical, social, cultural or creative activities;
d) maintain or improve personal self-esteem. - To schedule, prepare, implement and evaluate individual or group programs that are designed to meet the needs of the residents in accordance with the availability of resources.
- To work in collaboration with the community to secure entertainers, community groups, and other outside agencies to complement the programs offered.
- To teach and supervise activities directed at resident rehabilitation, motivation and creativity.
- To maintain statistics and progress reports in reference to individual treatment plans.
- To complete scheduled resident assessments in compliance with Ministry of Health and Long Term Care standards. Completion of RAI MDS requirements as scheduled and assigned.
- To communicate on a regular basis resident information and interests to members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- To regularly maintain resident progress notes through documentation on resident charts.
- To supervise and assist residents on scheduled out-trips.
- To assist in portering residents to and from activities when necessary.
- To assist with resident, staff and volunteer orientation.
- To attend both in-services and educational programs as assigned.
- To participate on various committees as assigned.
- To assist in serving meals and feeding residents.
- To maintain a safe, clean and tidy working environment.
- To requisition supplies and equipment based on budgetary restrictions.
- Provide person and family centred care to support physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of the resident.
- To perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A post-secondary diploma in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology or other related field from a community college or enrolled in a community college diploma program in such a field.
- Current certification in both C.P.R. and Standard First Aid.
- Current Food Handler Certification
- Good observation and reporting skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to deal compassionately with the elderly.
- Proficient computer skills.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license and a vehicle with insurance is required.
