POSITION SUMMARY:
Ensures the shelves are in good order so selection of books for exchange or requests can be done in a timely, efficient manner. Assists with other functions as determined by supervisor.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Shelves books daily, being careful to maintain strict order, either alphabetically by author or according to Dewey number.
- Assists with public service, for example circulation, patron registration, computer use, simple reference questions, photocopying, and reader’s advisory.
- Assists with exchanges or requests as directed.
- Searches for lost books.
- Assists with circulation.
- Assists with book displays, posters, summer reading, children’s programming, and other assistance needed.
- Telephones patrons to inform of book requests, or overdue books, in an understanding and courteous manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

At least 14 years of age, who is a quick learner, and able to complete on the job training

Knowledge of basic computer skills and the Internet is essential

Good communication and interpersonal skill

Knowledge of shelving systems, including the Dewey decimal system.
- Knowledge of the community is an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works in a library environment with all ages, including pre-school children.
- Physical activities including carrying heavy boxes of books and lifting/ moving tables and chairs.
