POSITION SUMMARY:

Ensures the shelves are in good order so selection of books for exchange or requests can be done in a timely, efficient manner. Assists with other functions as determined by supervisor.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Shelves books daily, being careful to maintain strict order, either alphabetically by author or according to Dewey number.
  • Assists with public service, for example circulation, patron registration, computer use, simple reference questions, photocopying, and reader’s advisory.
  • Assists with exchanges or requests as directed.
  • Searches for lost books.
  • Assists with circulation.
  • Assists with book displays, posters, summer reading, children’s programming, and other assistance needed.
  • Telephones patrons to inform of book requests, or overdue books, in an understanding and courteous manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  At least 14 years of age, who is a quick learner, and able to complete on the job training

  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and the Internet is essential

  • Good communication and interpersonal skill

  • Knowledge of shelving systems, including the Dewey decimal system.

  • Knowledge of the community is an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works in a library environment with all ages, including pre-school children.
  • Physical activities including carrying heavy boxes of books and lifting/ moving tables and chairs.
