Landfill Labourer

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Reports to: Waste Management/Rural Properties Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs various and diverse general labour functions as assigned by supervisor.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs tasks such as: debris and litter pickup, snow removal, installation of fencing, grass cutting, general labour functions, renovation work, painting, carpentry, window washing and routine maintenance of grounds and buildings.
  2. Works at the landfill site or other County facilities as assigned. 
  3. Works at the transfer station which includes responsibility for ensuring waste and recyclable materials are placed in the appropriate containers.
  4. Inspects waste at the landfill face and transfer station to ensure conformity with County practices.
  5. Operates a pickup truck, tractor, and miscellaneous power and hand tools when required.
  6. Requires good working knowledge of equipment safety practices and required to be a competent worker as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  7. Works in conditions which are hectic, unpredictable depending on the weather and in a daily environment where garbage disposal occurs.
  8. Exposure to loud noises, dirt, dust, odours, fumes, garbage and by-products, inclement weather, and sometimes abusive customers.
  9. Works with and near heavy equipment in a somewhat confined work area.
  10. Works with the public at the transfer station directing material to the correct area.
  11. Required to perform physical work such as lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Grade 10 or equivalent experience.
  2. Valid Class D license required.
  3. Previous construction/equipment operator experience or equivalent is desirable.
  4. Good public relations skills.
