Landfill Equipment Labourer

POSITION SUMMARY:

Operates various pieces of equipment used in the day-to-day operation of the sanitary landfill site, including manual tasks, and performs other duties as assigned by the Waste Management Foreman.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Operates a loader, tractor, bulldozer-scraper, landfill compactor and any other landfill equipment as required.
  2. Uses bulldozer-scraper to prepare cell to accept waste, to move earth and place cover material at the end of the day, to contour final cover when each cell is filled.
  3. Performs construction assignments such as trenching, sub-excavation, spreading, leveling, compacting, placing cover material, loading materials.
  4. Uses compactor to compact waste material in the cell in preparation for cover material.
  5. Inspects waste at the landfill face to ensure conformity with County standards.
  6. Performs equipment maintenance and repairs.
  7. Requires good working knowledge of equipment safety practices and required to be a competent worker as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  8. Works in conditions which are hectic, unpredictable depending on the weather, and in a daily environment where garbage disposal occurs.
  9. Exposure to loud noises, dirt, dust, odours, fumes, garbage and by-products, inclement weather, and sometimes abusive customers.
  10. Works with and near heavy equipment in a limited work area. 
  11. Required to perform physical work such as lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Grade 10 or equivalent experience.
  2. Valid class G driver’s license required. Class A license with Z endorsement is an asset.
  3. Three years’ construction/ equipment operator experience or equivalent is required.
