POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for leading and facilitating a variety of environmental sustainability initiatives within the broader community. Oversee the development and execution of the Climate Action Plan. Provide guidance to and act as the liaison for the community advisory groups, Smart Energy Oxford and Zero Waste Oxford.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Oversee and coordinate the following:
- Projects and public education initiatives to promote climate priorities as outlined in the Strategic Plan and related initiatives including the 100% Renewable Energy Plan and the Zero Waste Plan.
- Annual updates on the progress of community-based climate activities. o Incentives and funding opportunities for climate and energy initiatives. Lead grant application processes and reporting.
- Advocate for policy that will support environmental stewardship and climate change adaptation throughout the community.
- Develop and implement the Climate Action Plan.
- Attend and participate in relevant meetings, workshops, and conferences to stay up to date on emerging trends and best practices in sustainability.
- Compile and utilize data to monitor progress towards community sustainability initiatives.
- Provide critical review of federal, provincial and municipal policies and programmes to identify climate change related issues and impacts to the County.
- Research, synthesize, and communicate new or emerging ideas and practices in the realm of environmental sustainability and make recommendations where appropriate.
- Act as the primary contact and provide information to the public and external agencies on matters related to the County’s sustainability initiatives and actions.
- Liaise with external partners, including area municipalities, organizations, and government agencies, to share best practices and collaborate on joint initiatives.
- Prepare Council reports, internal reports, policies, contracts and related correspondence. Attends and participates at County Council meetings as necessary.
- Provides input and forecasting in the divisional business plan and budget process and ensures projects and initiatives are within the approved budget
QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:
- Post-secondary education in environmental science, engineering, energy or environmental technology or related field.
- Progressive experience and leadership in the field of sustainability with a focus on environmental sustainability. Experience within a municipal setting is an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Comprehensive knowledge of sustainability as it relates to climate change, energy, water, waste management, and corporate social responsibility on environmental affairs in a municipal setting.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and collaborate with internal and external partners to deliver programs, services, and outcomes.
- Ability to demonstrate the required competencies for this position in alignment with Oxford County’s competency framework.
- Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork, lead and empower teams and guide effective project management outcomes.
- Knowledge of relevant trends and best practices, legislation and regulations, such as The Paris Agreement, the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change, A Healthy Environment and a Health Economy, and the 2030 Emissions reduction Plan.
