POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Rural Community Librarian, the Branch Supervisor 1 maintains the day-to-day operations of a Village Library Branch located in a multipurpose facility or stand-alone location and open 13 to 16 hours per week.

The Branch Supervisor 1 provides high level customer service, including instruction and promotion of library resources, readers’ advisory, programming and technology support for customers of all ages and backgrounds. This includes those that may be living with a disability, addiction, mental illness, experiencing homelessness or have other complex needs.

All Oxford County Library (OCL) employees are responsible for supporting the Library’s Mission, Vision and Values and providing Oxford’s communities with excellent responsive services in a welcoming and inclusive environment

KEY ACOUNTABILITIES:

  • Responsible for opening / closing of the branch and maintaining overall tidiness.
  • Acts as first point of contact to address equipment failure, facilities related issues and emergencies. 
  • Delivers front-line service to library visitors through circulation tasks including patron accounts, check-in/out, renewing items, placing holds, processing transit items, and completing requests for new or interlibrary loan materials.
  • Direct supervisory responsibilities including hiring, performance management, coaching, employee relations, mentoring and professional development of nonunion staff
  • Completes monthly administrative duties including cash reconciliation and reporting branch statistics.
  • Maintains a library environment that is welcoming to all by assisting new and returning customers with readers’ advisory, technology support and the provision of information.
  • Instructs the public on the use of print and electronic resources including the library catalogue, electronic resources, and library technology.
  • In consultation with the Rural Community Librarian, identifies customer and community needs to plan and provide library and cosponsored programs and outreach events to meet those needs.
  • Receives service-related complaints, concerns and questions, and responds in a timely and respectful manner when required. Refers and escalates items to the appropriate staff member as needed.
  • Brings forth policy and procedural concerns and ideas for change as necessary. Participates in system-wide trials of new service initiatives. 
  • Maintains the currency of the branch collections in collaboration with the System Support Librarian. Facilitates branch exchanges, actively promotes collections through branch displays. 
  • In collaboration with the Rural Community Librarian, liaises with Area Municipal staff and internal and external community stakeholders.
  • Drafts social media posts and other promotional materials as required to promote library services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS

  • Post-secondary education in Library studies or a related discipline. University education is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 
  • Demonstrated experience working in a library environment, planning and delivering programs to a variety of ages. 
  • Previous supervisory experience considered an asset. 
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Advanced computer proficiency, including familiarity with and adaptability to new technologies. Knowledge of library software/integrated library system and systems are strongly recommended. 
  • Ability to interact respectfully with a variety of community member and groups, including those that may be living with a disability, addiction, mental illness, experiencing homelessness or have other complex needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, prioritize multiple deadlines and adapt to changing priorities. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team.
  • Access to reliable transportation required. 
  • Acceptable Vulnerable Sector Police Check

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works in a library environment either within a multipurpose building or in a stand-alone location; hours of work include days, evenings and weekends. 
  • Physical activity including lifting heavy boxes, bending and squatting, pushing carts of books/materials, and sitting/standing for extended periods of time. 
  • Some basic building maintenance tasks required, such as shovelling of walkways.
