Ontario Tourism Industry Health Check - April 2023

Destination Ontario’s Insights team has released the most recent Ontario Tourism Health Check report which highlights key recovery indicators such as accommodation occupancy rates and border crossings. This report tells the tourism recovery story by curating relevant tourism data into a form that visualizes the information for industry stakeholders.

  • Tourism in Ontario is in an overall upward recovery trend - some KPIs have fully surpassed 2022 levels in all regions but are still below pre-pandemic levels (2019)
  • Travel Price Index (TPI) in April 2023 increased by 4.4% compared with April 2022 levels, following a 6.5% increase in March
  • Accommodation has significantly increased by 17.0%, and small increases can also be found in recreation and restaurant
  • The rise in travel costs has yet to deter travel as the demand to travel was really strong in January 2023 after two years of travel restrictions

  • Border crossings from all key markets in March 2023 surpassed 2022 levels but have not reached pre-pandemic levels (2019)
