Investment in affordable housing

County Council receives an update next council meeting on two new initiatives to help address the housing crisis in Oxford County. The first proposal seeks $1.2 million from the Affordable Housing Reserve to support the development of approximately 30 affordable housing units for seniors in Woodstock. A second proposal seeks $300,000 from the reserve to offer grants of up to $15,000 to homeowners looking to add a secondary housing unit on their property, such as a basement apartment, to be rented out at an affordable rate.

Paramedic services deployment review results

A joint working group between Oxford, Elgin and Perth paramedic services is being proposed as the next step to acting on the recommendations of the Joint Municipal Paramedic Service Deployment Review. County Council will be asked next meeting to accept the final results of the independent review and approve Oxford’s role in the group, which will establish a coordinated deployment plan for the three municipalities (how they respond to calls along their shared borders). The three municipalities will also explore opportunities to coordinate other services, like major incident response, and some administrative functions, like purchasing and training. The joint deployment review was conducted by an independent third party in accordance with requirements of the Ontario Municipal Modernization Fund.

Annual wastewater system reports

County Council receives the 2021 Annual Wastewater Treatment Plant Summary Reports and the 2021 Annual Biosolids Summary Report on March 9. Together, the reports show the County’s strong performance in managing wastewater generated by more than 70,000 residents and businesses in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

In 2021 six of the County’s nine municipal wastewater systems achieved 100% compliance ratings (Ingersoll, Norwich, Mount Elgin, Tavistock, Tillsonburg and Woodstock), with remaining systems receiving ratings of 99% (Thamesford), 96% (Drumbo) and 95% (Plattsville).

The County invested more than $17 million in rate-supported (non-taxation) wastewater infrastructure last year, including County-wide sanitary sewer replacements, expansion of the Drumbo treatment plant, upgrades to the Tillsonburg treatment plant and more. In support of the County’s commitment to innovative and green technology, the program also undertook various projects to offset facility non-renewable energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The County’s 2021 reports will be posted online by March 31 at www.oxfordcounty.ca/water-wastewater
