UPDATE: JUNE 16, 2009 - 2:00 PM

At the time of this update, 84 cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, have been confirmed in Oxford County.

Pertussis is a highly contagious disease caused by bacteria. Infants under one year of age and pregnant women in their third trimester are most vulnerable to the effects of pertussis, which can cause serious complications and sometimes death in infants. Pertussis leads to one to three deaths in Canada each year.
