Immunization can help save lives and prevent serious illness. The World Health Organization estimates that immunization saves more than two million lives each year.
Immunization (vaccines) and infectious disease programs are closely linked. Both programs work to eliminate or minimize the occurrence and impact of preventable diseases in a community. Public health professionals help do this by:
- Promoting and providing immunization to the community
- Teaching people how to prevent illness
- Conducting disease surveillance
- Following up on cases of infectious diseases to help prevent spread
- Managing outbreaks
