2016 Annual Waste Management reports, Annual progress report of the 10 Year Shelter Plan, Drumbo Wastewater Treatment Plant Class environmental Assessment Update and more.

2016 Annual Waste Management reports

County Council will receive the 2016 Annual Waste Management Reports, which show that the Oxford County Waste Management Facilities and Operations performed well in 2016 and that the facilities and operations met all Governmental requirements.Highlights note that approximately 62,000 tonnes of material were received at the Waste Management Facility in 2016, a reduction of 6% from 2015, with 20,000 tonnes being diverted and recycled, an increase of 4% from the previous year.  In addition, 7,525 tonnes of residential blue box material was collected and processed from all eight municipalities in Oxford County, representing an 11% increase from 2015. The waste diversion rate for Oxford County in 2016 is expected to be 60% (to be confirmed by the Waste Diversion Ontario Datacall in April 2017).

The individual waste management reports will be posted to the County website for the public the week of March 20.

2016 Annual progress report of the 10 Year Shelter Plan

County Council will receive an update on affordable housing initiatives that were started or completed in 2016. Key accomplishments note that 38 new affordable rental units were completed in 2016; seven homeownership loans were provided; and two Ontario Renovate loans were provided. In addition, three new projects were approved in 2016 to support 58 new affordable housing units in Woodstock and Tillsonburg, including 38 units which will achieve high energy performance above and beyond Ontario Building Code requirements.

Although new units are coming on stream to increase supply, the report notes that demand for rent-geared-to-income housing continues to grow. In 2015 over 1,400 applicants were waiting for a social housing unit. In 2016, the waiting list grew to 1,500.

Drumbo Wastewater Treatment Plant Class Environmental Assessment Update

County Council will receive an update on the Drumbo Wastewater Treatment Plant Class Environmental Assessment next Council meeting, along with results of the Princeton surface water sampling completed in 2016. The report finds that surface water sampling in Princeton indicates that septic systems in the area are not causing significant bacterial contamination and recommends that Princeton continues to be serviced by privately owned on-site septic systems.

The launch of SepticSmart! Oxford

Council will hear details about the launch of SepticSmart! Oxford, a county-wide campaign to educate homeowners about the proper care and maintenance of septic systems. Many communities in Oxford County rely on private water and wastewater services. SepticSmart! Oxford will offer free workshops and “house calls” conducted by qualified sewage inspectors as key strategies to reassure homeowners about their systems and ensure they understand how to properly maintain them.
