Council this Week: Highlights from the Nov 9 County Council agenda
Comments on National Housing Strategy, revised Trans Canada Trail route in Tillsonburg, and more
Review of Provincial Land Use Plans
The County’s Community & Strategic Planning Office is bringing forward on November 9 Oxford’s comments on the provincial review of four land use plans for the area bordered by Peterborough County, Simcoe County, Waterloo Region and Brant County. Although Oxford County is outside of the area, Planning notes it may still be indirectly affected by some of the proposed policies, including expansion of settlement areas; planning for transportation infrastructure; protecting employment areas; and the creation of net-zero and “complete communities” that are designed to mitigate climate change impacts.

National Housing Strategy submission
County Council will review the Human Service’s proposed submission to on the National Housing Strategy next Council meeting. Oxford’s feedback on Canada’s housing strategy advocates for a direct funding relationship between the Federal Government and municipalities; working with provincial governments to increase housing allowance for social assistance; the availability of operating dollars for people with mental health and addictions, youth, and seniors aging in place; and an accelerated focus on energy efficiency in housing stock.

Trans Canada Trail revised route
Construction of the Trans Canada Trail from Zenda Line to Base Line construction in Tillsonburg is progressing well with gate installation, signage and pedestrian access at bridge crossings remaining. On November 9, County Council will be asked to approve changing the route of the trail west of Zenda Line; originally planned for Oxford Road 20, it is now proposed on the former CASO rail line. This new off-road trail section will be safer since it is off road and will also provide a direct link to the existing trail network in Tillsonburg. The cost of the change is estimated at $200,000 and would fall within the original budget proposal.
