Public Health to hold information session on Beachville air-shed work plan
Oxford County is leading the Beachville air-shed work plan in response to community concerns about air quality in the area

Oxford County Public Health is hosting a public information session to explain the Beachville air-shed work plan announced by Oxford County on June 25. The session takes place:

            Wednesday, July 23, 2014

6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Colombo Club

RR 1, 434719 West Hill Line, Beachville

The session will explain key steps in the work plan; introduce partners, including Public Health Ontario; and answer questions about the work plan, which will focus on particulate matter from quarry operations in the Beachville area.

Public Health Ontario Chief of Environmental and Occupational Health Dr. Ray Copes, who is part of the consultation team, will be on hand to answer questions from the public on July 23. Also in attendance will be Oxford County’s Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Douglas Neal and Public Health staff.

County Council approved the undertaking of a Beachville air-shed work plan in a report to Council last month. The report was a response to community concerns about air quality due to existing aggregate operations in the area, particularly from a local lime quarry that is the site of a proposed private landfill by Walker Environmental Group.

The work plan investigation will be led by Oxford County Public Health in partnership with Public Health Ontario and in consultation with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change. The project will collect new, independent air quality data and examine scientific research on whether or not aggregate operations can cause an adverse impact to air quality and, thereby, affect human health.

The public information session is part of a first step in gathering feedback and information from the community, with additional opportunities for public questions and comment to follow in the coming months. For more information or to submit a comment now, visit www.oxfordcounty.ca/speakup.
