Notice of Water system maintenance in Mt Elgin

Service interruption on June 23-25, 2021

Oxford County Public Works will be conducting additional cleaning of the watermains in the Mt. Elgin water system from June 23-25, 2021. Customers should expect water to be off periodically overnight for two nights starting Wednesday, June 23, 2021, from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am, with completion by 6:00 am Friday, June 25, 2021

The outage will begin at 10:00 pm each evening, and service will be restored by 6:00 am the following morning. Consumers are cautioned not to use any water during this time period for any purpose until the operation is finished. During the hours of swabbing, the County recommends turning off your incoming water supply as well as your water softener and the electrical supply to your hot water tank. Failure to observe these precautions could result in material being drawn into the building’s plumbing and possibly plugging the water line from the street to the building. It is the consumer’s responsibility to take these preventive measures.

Following the maintenance, when the water has been turned back on, turn on a cold water tap not connected to a water softener or filter and let it run for approximately three (3) to five (5) minutes to clear the lines. If your water remains discoloured, continue running water, allowing sufficient time for it to clear. Discoloured water should not be consumed. The clear water has adequate levels of chlorine to ensure disinfection.

It is advisable to keep a supply of water, in containers, on hand for use during the time the water is off. A bucket of water can be used to refill a toilet tank to enable flushing.

If you have any questions, please call the County of Oxford Public Works Department at 1-866-537-7778 or 519-539-9800. We apologize for any inconvenience.
