Food safety
Food safety is a mandatory program for Ontario’s health units under the Ontario Public Health Standards. Oxford County Public Health works to prevent and reduce foodborne illness in the community by:
  • Inspecting food premises
  • Coordinating food handler training
  • Educating people about food safety
  • Analyzing data about foodborne illness in Oxford County
  • Investigating and responding to outbreaks of foodborne illness, unsafe food handling practices, food recalls, etc.
  • Providing expertise for food-related issues arising from floods, fires, power outages and other situations that may affect food safety

IMPORTANT FOOD SAFETY UPDATE


Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is investigating E.coli in certain frozen beef products.
Since the investigation began there have been recalls for more than 135 ground beef and steakette products. There has been at least one illness due to E. coli 0157:H7 to date.

Remember:
  • Raw ground beef should always be considered to be possibly contaminated with harmful bacteria.
  • Cooking raw hamburger to 71 C will destroy e.coli O157:H7, along with any other bacteria.
  • Food-borne illness can be prevented with simple food handling techniques: cook, chill, separate and clean. Learn more
